Medical Care in Halifax Regional Municipality

Halifax is the capital of Nova Scotia and its largest metropolitan area. As a result the largest and most advanced medical centers in the Province are located in Halifax.

The QEII Health Sciences Centre is an advanced medical center with the latest in equipment and medical expertise. It is here where you would go for many major medical procedures and operations. This facility is a result of the merging of several medical facilities into one.

Halifax has one of the finest childrens and womans services facilities in all of Canada. The IWK Heath Centre, is world renowned for its child care. This is also one of the finest hospitals in the country for assisting woman in child birth. The Dickson Center is one of most respected cancer treatment facilities in Canada.

Dartmouth also has its own hospital called the Dartmouth General Hospital. It provides services to approximately 120,000 people in Dartmouth and surrounding areas.

The Cobequid Community Health Centre is located in Lower Sackville. This is a well respected medical facility which is used for emergencies, blood tests, x-rays and other tests. There are no overnight beds here. If you need to be admitted you are taken to one of the hospitals in the area. This facility services all of HRM but particularly Sackville, Bedford, Fall River and Hammonds Plains.

There are numerous walk-in medical clinics throughout HRM where you can simply show up without an appointment and see a doctor. These have proven to be very popular.

There are several assisted living and long term care facilities throughout HRM. Many are operated by Shannex and include several under the brand of Parkland.

The QEII Health Sciences Centre is spread across 10 buildings, which now comprise two geographically separate campuses (formally termed "sites") on the Halifax Peninsula.
